Detroit – Independent label Goomba Music will be releasing the debut record from Temple of Thieves on Monday, May 6, 2013 (Europe & UK) and Tuesday, May 7, 2013 (North America). Formed by bassist Chief Spires and guitarist John Ehlers, former members of the technical death metal band Nile in 2010, Passing Through The Zer0s is a considerable departure from death metal.
While writing and recording demos, and excited about the vibe they were creating, Spires thought of his friend and legendary drummer Flo Mounier from Cryptopsy. During his tenure with Nile, Spires and Mounier toured together for a few years. They became close friends and realized they had a lot of the same musical interests outside of death metal. Spires recollects, “During our touring years, Flo and I listened to all kinds of music while traveling from town to town. Many nights after our shows we’d relax on the bus listening to Deftones, Radiohead and similar bands.” After listening to the demos, Mounier travelled to Whitestone Studios in Greenville, South Carolina to record a five song EP. When the recording was completed, the search for the right singer began.
After auditioning a few local vocalists, Spires and Ehlers realized they needed to look further for the right voice. One evening while in Atlanta they heard Michael Rock singing for a local band and were blown away. Spires recalls, “Our jaws dropped when we heard Michael. We knew he was the right guy to front this band”. They approached Rock with a CD of the songs and asked him to give it a listen. Three days later he had written lyrics and recorded vocals for one the songs. Rock’s voice and lyrical creativity confirmed their intuitions and they offered Rock the job. Temple of Thieves was born. The band finished the recording the EP and made it available for streaming and purchase on their website.
In December, 2011 Goomba Music were made aware of Temple of Thieves and were blown away by the band. Goomba Music quickly offered the band a contract. The band commenced to write material for their debut, and entered the studio in June 2012 to begin the recording process.
From the opening track, “In The Garden”, Passing Through The Zer0s commands the listener’s attention and holds it throughout its eleven songs. One cannot only listen to Passing Through The Zer0s one becomes immersed in it. It ebbs and flows like it has a purpose. The performances on Passing Through The Zer0s are certain to impress even the most ardent music critic and fan, as each member demonstrates their abilities with extraordinary technical skill and passion.
Of the album, vocalist and principal lyricist Rock states, “This album is release of sorts. I started out specifically trying to not get consumed by the music and bring a lighter side to the album but I was unsuccessful. The music took me to other places and I started to write about things that I wanted to keep inside. It is a little bit of a relief now and very cool to hear the emotions blending with John and Chief’s guitars. It really brings a lot of these tunes to life and I'm proud of what we have created”.
Ehlers continues, “This release and band encompass all my heart, soul, dreams, and goals. Days, weeks, months, of hard work all compiled and complete in Passing Through The Zer0s. Immortality through art. This album also represents my brothers Chief, Flo, Mike and extended family… our fans. Passing Through The Zer0s was written with them in mind. Will people like this part? This song? Will they remember it? Will it be replaying in their heads after they hear it? At the same time we stayed true to ourselves and did not compromise our inspiration, creativity and what we like as musicians ourselves.”
This album has over two years of heart, soul and dedication poured into it” Spires adds. “My goal for Temple of Thieves was to make an album that I love to listen to. We succeeded! I'm very proud of this record.”
Mounier concludes, “I sincerely hope that people are moved by this music and enjoy the album. The songs are so catchy and have moods that take your mind to different emotional places. I am very proud to be part of this journey and hold high respect for all involved with this band. I look forward to creating more music with these great individuals and having the support of fans to continue on this Temple of Thieves experience. Being able to take these recorded feelings and emotions to the live stage is definitely a huge goal of mine.”
